3 Alternative Feeds

3 alternative feeds for future animal feed

Alternative protein sources for poultry diets are necessary in order to reduce farmers’ dependence on traditional sources of protein. Supply, availability and nutritional value are some of the necessary criteria in the search for suitable alternatives.

The poultry sector plays a vital role in improving the global food security status of consumers. Commercial and smallholder poultry enterprises are growing, thereby increasing the demand for poultry feeds. Soya bean and fishmeal have traditionally been the main protein sources in poultry feeds, but with the growth of the poultry sector and the world’s population, they are failing to meet the increasing demand.

Due to shortages and cost considerations, it is inevitable that more consideration is given to alternative protein supplements to be utilised in poultry feeds in the near future. The high cost and lack of availability of commercial protein sources at times, are known as some of the main limitations of efficient animal production. In livestock and poultry production, feed accounts for the largest single cost, making up approximately 60-80% of the total cost.

PT Adi Alam Segar (ALAM GROUP) offers alternative animal feed products. This alternative feed can serve as supplementary food for livestock such as chickens, cows, goats, buffaloes, pigs, horses, and poultry.

Here are other types of alternative feed:

1. Copra Meal/ Copra Cake

Copra meal is produced in the extraction of oil from coconuts. The coconut is manually harvested, the outer husk removed, and the white copra cut from within the shell. The copra is dried by direct or indirect drying, using the husk and shell as the fuel source. When the copra is dry, the oil is mechanical or solvent (hexane) extracted to yield 70% coconut oil and 30% copra meal. The residual meal is called copra meal. It is brown because it has been cooked.

2. Cassava Residue

Tapioca Residue is a by-product of tapioca starch processing from cassava roots. Tapioca residue is often used to produce animal feed, organic fertiliser, and ethanol manufactured in pellets. With the good natural smell of tapioca root and yellow-brown colour, it is so attractive for most cattle feeding such as cow goad, sheep, pig, etc. This is mostly used as animal feed to supply nutrients effectively and economically.

I find the supplementary livestock feed from copra cake to be very beneficial for our farm.

Indeed, this can serve as an additional feed for cattle, pigs, poultry, etc., providing them with additional organic protein.
